Glossary

Swelling

A visible or noticeable increase in tissue volume associated with fluid accumulation.

Appearance does not tell the whole story

Swelling may have many causes and should not be identified only from a photograph or the morning appearance of the face.

The meaning of “Swelling” always depends on the situation of the individual person. During consultation it is explained in plain language and never used as a ready diagnosis.

A sudden change calls for caution

Painful, one sided, rapidly increasing or unexplained swelling needs medical advice before manual work.

It is most useful to understand “Swelling” in the context of wellbeing, safety and the purpose of the visit. The term alone does not decide which technique to use or what response to expect.

What information helps before a visit

Explain when swelling began, whether it affects one side and whether pain, redness or other symptoms are present.

This helps identify situations in which diagnosis must come before treatment.
